Is It Season Over For Liverpool?

WORDS BY ZAC ASSOUNI

It has been a wild start to the Premier League season so far but by far the most surprising has been the fact that reigning champions Liverpool currently sit in 7th place with six losses. What makes this even more astounding is fact that a whopping 400 million pounds that was spent in the summer transfer window to bolster the squad with most of the players that came through the door not yet settled. Question is, can the reds still win the Premier League this season or is it simply too far gone.

The end of the 2024/25 season saw Liverpool living it up in Ibiza after wrapping up the title with four games remaining thanks to stellar seasons from core players such as Mohammed Salah who took home not only the golden boot but also most assists, Virgil Van Dijk who lead the team brilliantly in defense and Trent Alexander-Arnold who continued to provide incredible offensive output and generating attack after attack. These core players which flourished for many seasons under Jurgen Klopp would have to do the same under new manger Arne Slot considering no new additions would be arriving.

After the title was won though, the reds higher ups decided it was time to back the current project by breaking the record British transfer fee by signing Florian Wirtz from Bayern Leverkusen and then breaking it once more by finally completing the signing of Alexander Isak from Newcastle United alongside the arrivals of Hugo Ekitike, Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez. While making these signings and spending big looked great on paper, Slot could have a big problem on his hands when it came to properly adjusting to fit in all these new players and that he has with the attacking dilemma of having Ekitike, a number nine and Isak also a number 9 having to share the same front three already consisting of so many attacking names.

In midfield, Florian Wirtz is yet to provide much impact, and it seems that the midfield is simply too attack minded with Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch finding quite a nice balance in the middle of the park. Defensively, the departure of Alexander-Arnold is hurting as we’ve seen the reds struggle to transition from defence to attack in the seamless way they were only a few months ago.

While it’s safe to say that the new arrivals of these big money names haven’t brought a new dimension to this Liverpool side, it’s not ridiculous to suggest that they could settle and start to find some form similarly to the way Chelsea have spent since their takeover bringing in big names such as Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez both costing 100 million pounds plus. Now we see defined roles for the midfield pair as well as starting elevens starting to look more consistent week to week which have elevated not only the playing style of the players but also propelling the blues to 4th in the Premier League.

If Liverpool want to change their luck and put themselves back where they were, they must find that same level of consistency they had last season while also integrating the new arrivals in a way that makes sense and plays to the strengths of the players themselves.
