After leaving Real Madrid’s academy, Mata would go on to become a creative engine for Valencia as the Spaniard registered 46 goals and 52 assists in 174 appearances. Mata would also become a part of a deadly Spanish attack alongside David Silva and David Villa who were pivotal in Valencia’s 2008 Copa Del Rey win and earned them all places in Spain’s famous 2010 World Cup victory.
From there, Mata would take his creative brilliance to Chelsea where he would score 33 goals along with 58 assists in 135 appearances. At his peak, Mata was among the best playmakers in world football and was never one to rely on pace, instead mastering the art of dribbling and a signature Spanish flare that led Mata to become Chelsea’s player of the year in his first two seasons as well as scoring in Spain’s 4-0 Euros 2012 victory over Italy.
Mata’s time at Chelsea will always be highlighted by his corner kick assist that found the head of Didier Drogba in the 88th minute of the 2012 Champions League Final against Bayern Munich leading to Chelsea’s first Champions League Final win in their history.
When Jose Mourinho’s second stint at Chelsea began, Mata was on the outside looking in as Mourinho would prefer Oscar in the number ten role due to his pace and agility as well as his ability to track back better than Mata. This meant that the reigning Premier League champions would come knocking.
For a then club record fee, Manchester United would bring Mata to Old Trafford where he scored 51 goals and had 47 assists in 285 appearances for the red devils where he served as a veteran leader and won the FA Cup, League Cup as well as the Europa League reunited with Jose Mourinho. Mata’s consistency and professionalism shone during his eight year stint at United, especially with multiple managers entering and departing the club.
After leaving England, Mata would continue to win titles across the globe such as a Turkish Super Lig title with Galatasaray and a J1 League title with Vissel Kobe before gracing us with his presence by joining the Western Sydney Wanderers for the 2024/25 season. Although, Mata never really found a place in Western Sydney, leaving the club and joining Melbourne Victory in late 2025 where he has absolutely shone since.
His lack of pace and quickness has certainly not stunted him; in fact, his technical ability has taken Australian football by storm in the navy blue so far scoring 4 goals and providing 11 assists so far this season.
Even with his engine slowing down, the technical flair of Juan Mata continues to live on.
